I-9 Documentation Inspection Flexibility Deadline Extended Until April 30, 2022

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have extended the deadline for I-9 Documentation inspection flexibility once again. The current extension was set to expire on December 31, 2021, but now goes until April 30, 2022.

Employers with employees that work exclusively in a remote setting due to COVID-19-related precautions have been allowed to inspect the I-9 Section 2 documentation for their new hires via fax, e-mail, or video. Once these employers resume normal, non-remote business operations, employees who underwent virtual verification must report in to have their documentation reviewed in person.

Clients using California Payroll’s Employee Onboarding Module can offer their new hires the ability to electronically complete their I-9 verification process and store their documentation in the Documentation Portal. Once your new hires’ documentation is verified, you’re able to select the appropriate documents from the drop down lists and then sign off as the Authorized Representative.
