The California Employer’s Guide to Labor Law Posters

Labor Law Posters are an essential part of employment compliance, and California is a state with a surplus of them. San Francisco alone has over 15 special postings including regulations like the Fair Chance Ordinance or Paid Parental Leave.

There’s a lot to know about labor law poster compliance in California. That’s why we wrote a 10-page guide on them and made it free. We’re not lawyers, but we do have over 20 years of experience in California employment compliance.

Here’s a few of the topics we cover in the guide:

Many federal, state, and city agencies require employers to post specific notices in their workplace in a conspicuous area. Each individual notice or “posting” describes a law, regulation, or responsibility which employees must be informed of. Typically, these posters cover essential employee rights such as minimum wage, specific leave rights, worker’s compensation, and workplace safety among other items.

Examples

  • California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) requires a posting explaining employee unemployment benefits eligibility.
  • The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) requires a posting that explains employee rights against workplace discrimination.
  • Federal, State, and Local governments require postings describing minimum wage requirements.
  • California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CalOSHA) requires a posting describing employee rights and employer requirements to ensure safety in the workplace.

*Note: there are many more required postings, and they are constantly changing.

A labor law poster is a compilation of many labor law postings.

A labor law poster service monitors all applicable postings for an employer depending on the company location(s) or worksites. It can compile them all into one convenient poster that is shipped to clients. When a posting update applies to an employer, they can either receive an updated posting or an entirely new poster, including the updated posting.

No, employers are not required to use a labor law poster service to comply with labor law posting regulations. Each agency (federal, state, or local) that requires an individual posting provides required regulations online in multiple languages. These need to be individually downloaded and printed in adherence with sizing requirements and posted and updated according to the requirements of their applicable agency.

While Federal postings are a bit easier to manage, employers still need to check for applicable state and local (county postings) found on other websites. Some of these postings are not required for specific industries, and it can be tough to know which ones are necessary.
